From rough edges to a little shine.
There’s something lovely about seeing a rough find slowly change. Like the water-worn stones along a shore, a carefully tumbled rock reminds us that beauty can take time. The starting rocks, the equipment, and a patient approach all matter.

Choose compatible stones
For a first batch, choose sound rocks suited to tumbling and group stones of similar hardness together. Different materials do not always wear at the same rate. Avoid heavily cracked or crumbly pieces.
Follow your tumbler’s instructions
A typical rotary process moves through coarse grinding, finer grinding, pre-polishing, and polishing. Follow the equipment maker’s directions for your barrel, load, and supplies rather than assuming every tumbler uses the same recipe.
Keep each stage clean
Clean the stones, barrel, and lid carefully between stages so coarse grit does not carry into the finer steps. Check the stones as you go; a calendar alone cannot tell you when a batch is ready.
