Start by looking
Turn your stone in your hand and choose the side you want to show. Look at its natural edges and think about which way it might hang as a pendant.
Practice before a favorite piece
Use practice wire and a spare stone while you get comfortable with your tools. Work slowly, make small adjustments, and check how the wire sits against the stone.
